Year Five

Hello and welcome to Year 5

Spring 2026

English

In our Pole to Pole topic, we enjoyed reading about Ernest Shackleton and his expedition aboard the ship Endurance. We wrote letters of application, descriptive paragraphs, diary entries, biographies and reports. We were particularly proud of our poetry.

Art

Having studied the work of William Morris, we created clay tiles taking inspiration from his love of nature.

DT

In DT, we investigated cam mechanisms. We then designed and made a moving toy, using the theme of Greek myths for our characters. Getting the mechanisms to work smoothly, meant we had to be real Team Bees and Resilient Tortoises.

Greek Day

In history, we have been studying the Ancient Greeks. We ended our topic with a Greek Day. The children enjoyed having the opportunity to dress up, eat Greek food, write their name in Greek and construct paper models of the Parthenon.

PSHE

In Children’s Mental Health Week, the children created a class mosaic, decorating a paper square to show something special about themselves. They also wrote about their ‘perfect’ place – this could be a real or imaginary place, but somewhere where they feel safe and comfortable to let their true selves shine through.

Mill Green Museum

We enjoyed a trip to Mill Green Museum for our DT topic of ‘Bread’. We found out how the mill works and made our own model mill wheels from Lego. The best part was making our own bread rolls which we took home to eat and enjoy!

Autumn 2025

As part of our Science learning about Earth and space, we held the ‘Great Space Sleepover’. The children enjoyed listening to some space stories, going on a star walk, watching a space movie (with hot chocolate and popcorn!) and then snuggling down to sleep in the school hall! Although we were unlucky with cloudy skies, that didn’t dim the excitement of spotting constellations on the ipads!

We had great fun in PSHE, making up a group game using an object chosen at random. This helped us learn the importance of having, and following, rules and why it is important that they are clear to everybody. We enjoyed sharing our games with the rest of the class.

We enjoyed designing personality swirls; these have helped us get to know and understand each other.

Summer 2025

Year 5 have had a very busy final term with lots of fun, laughter and learning. We had a fantastic day at Chiltern Open Air Museum, where we took part in an Anglo-Saxon day. This really brought our history learning to life.

To mark mental health week, we made our own pocket monsters. If we are feeling worried, sad or scared, we can tell our monsters our worries and they will take them away!

In art, we have been learning about art from other cultures. Our work has included Aboriginal dot paintings, mehndi designs and Chinese blue willow pattern plates.

In June we shared our djembe drumming with the whole school, parents and carers in musical sharing assembly. We showed our new skills and knowledge and had great control of the rhythm.

We all thoroughly enjoyed taking part in our Year 5 and 6 production, ‘Rock Bottom’ and would like to thank our families and friends for coming to watch us!

Thank you for coming along to our open evening; we loved sharing our work from this year with you all!
